AASECT 2007

Publicize
vs. “advertise” or “market your practice”
  • Informational, not selling approach

  • On the Internet, people are looking for INFORMATION

Look at useful examples
(cf.aasect.org)

Step 1: Domain names: reserve your name NOW!
Step 2: Find a web designer
  • Professional design firm

    • CyberSytes www.cysy.com ($75/hr plus hosting)
    • Alice Swanson ($50/hr) aswanson@mindspring.com
    • Look at sites you like, then contact designer
        • Outline your site
        • Get estimate
        • Stress SEO – do not use dynamic database approach
  • Learn how, it’s not hard (it is time-consuming!)
    • Use Dreamweaver or Frontpage
    • Take a class
    • Buy cheap software from www.journeyed.com (discounts for faculty, students, staff of educational institutions – up to 75%)
    • Don’t use templates
  • Locate student/amateur enthusiast
Step 3: Conceptualize your website
  • Pattern after a site you like

  • Draw map or chart to show how pages link together
  • Each page has title and one major focus (like lines in an outline)
  • What are the buttons? (major headings of site)
  • Functionality: imagine yourself as the user
  • Remember, people are looking for information
